Lions-CNE Peewee Baseball Tournament
For more than half a century, young people throughout Southern Ontario have been rising in the early hours of the morning to journey to the Canadian National Exhibition and compete for the coveted championship of the Lions-CNE Peewee Baseball Tournament.
2018 marks the 62nd year of the annual tournament, the oldest and most prestigious event of its kind in Ontario for 12 – 13 year olds. Thirty-two teams from Toronto and (southern) Ontario compete over 8 days in a single elimination event.
For our upcoming summer event the following teams have been invited to participate: Halton Hills (AA), Vaughn (AAA), Royal York (AA), North Toronto (AAA), Whitby (AAA), North York (AAA), Hamilton (AAA), West Toronto (AAA), East York (AAA), Aurora (AAA), Burlington #2 (AA), Toronto Playgrounds (A), Milton (AAA), North Toronto (AA), Leaside (AAA), North York (AA), Leaside (AA), Peterborough (AA), Barrie (AAA), Newmarket (AAA), Mississauga North #2 (A), Scarborough (AAA), Niagara Falls (AA), Etobicoke (AAA).
The following 8 teams will participate in the Pegg Tourney: Orillia (A), Pickering (A), Georgina (B), Stouffville (A), Thornhill (A), Barrie (A), Kawartha (A), Halton Hills (B).
The teams may vary from year to year but the excitement of a competitive ball tournament and a day, or four, at the Exhibition has always been a summer highlight for thousands of youngsters and their families.
The PEGG CUP - a tournament within our tournament:
Although our 32-team annual tournament involves AAA and AA teams we also reach out to teams at the 'A' and lower levels, particularly from smaller communities, by instituting a tournament within a tournament. The PEGG GROUP is an 8-team grouping for teams at 'A' level and lower. The PEGG GROUP champions are accorded all of the honours of a winning tournament team, with an awards ceremony where the winners are presented with a championship trophy and individual gold medals.
The winner of this group continues on in the main draw with the opportunity to play in the quarter-finals and beyond, as occured in 2017 when the Niagara Falls Falcons 'A' won the PEGG Championship and continued with wins in the quarters and semis, only to be defeated in the final by the Oakville AAA team. As overall tournament runner-up they, as well as Oakville, recieved team jackets. One day the little guy will go all the way as Ron Pegg always prophesizes!
Past PEGG Champions:
- 2013: Peterborough Tigers
- 2014: Oshawa Legionaires
- 2015: Barrie Red Sox
- 2016: Welland Mustangs
- 2017: Niagara Falls Falcons
For 2018 we will be using Coronation Park, which is located immediately outside of the Princes' Gates (east end of the grounds).
